Wild Swan Theater of Ann Arbor has been awarded a $21,400 Local Network Grant for “Freedom Train: Exploring Michigan’s Underground Railroad.” An original theater production will be created as well as related educational programming and supplemental materials that explore the history of the Underground Railroad in Southeast Michigan. This is a sequel to “Along the Tracks: Michigan and the Underground Railroad,” which was a part of Detroit’s Tricentennial celebration in 2001. Nine public performances will take place at Washtenaw Community College’s Towsley Auditorium in February 2004. The project is cosponsored by the African-American Museum of Washtenaw County, and the University of Michigan’s Arts of Citizenship Program, School of Information, and Residential College.

Along the Tracks -- Part Two

This production about the Underground Railroad in Michigan and Canada follows the stirring adventure of three teen-age runaway slaves. Ben, Sally, and Daniel were first introduced to our audiences in 2001 and 2003 with our production of Along the Tracks - Part One when the siblings were hidden for a night in a farm cellar outside Ann Arbor. This second part, picking up where the first left off, follows what happens to the young people after they are reunited with their parents in Canada. Created in response to hundreds of requests for a sequel, Along the Tracks - Part Two is a deeply satisfying play in its own right as well as the continuation of the saga of one family's flight from slavery. More harrowing circumstances confront the family as 12 year old Daniel sickens of fever and 13 year old Ben is kidnapped by a bounty hunter. Because of the seriousness of the subject matter and the necessary violence of Ben's rescue, this play is not recommended for children younger than 4th grade.
