Same Mission. Many Stories.
About the program
This program focuses on the experiences of veterans in Michigan through guided conversations. Phase I of the project took place in 2023 where Michigan Humanities partnered with two universities to train students in how to host reflective community conversations. Student training was six weeks, and once it was completed, each university hosted three conversations with women veterans. Phase II of the project focuses on a partnership between Michigan Humanities and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA).
This partnership grew out of connections made during Phase I of the project, where MVAA recognized the impact that the reflective conversations were having on veterans across the state. In Phase II, Michigan Humanities staff will hold a two-day reflective conversation training for approximately 25 MVAA staff and volunteers that represent all 10 prosperity regions in Michigan. The newly trained facilitators will then hold two conversations in each region focused on current experiences of underrepresented communities within the military. Following the training, reflective conversations with veterans will be grounded in humanities objects and the community conversation methodology.
